Chaos at Athens Airport / Greek Chief Prosecutor Orders Urgent Investigation

The Athens First Instance Prosecutor's Office ordered an urgent investigation into the total power outage in the Athens FIR that caused chaos in air transport.

The head of the Athens prosecutor's office, Aristides Korreas, ordered a preliminary investigation, which will be carried out by the electronic crime department.

As part of the investigation, it will be investigated whether the crime of dangerous interference with aircraft traffic was committed and where the interference came from on almost all frequencies of the Athens FIR.

The competent services are converging on a technical malfunction, perhaps in the telecommunications infrastructure or old equipment, and not on an external threat, as reported by the Greek daily 'Protothema'. 

The problem also extended to the telecommunications network of the central services of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, affecting telephone communications and internet access.

The Air Force system, completely autonomous, was not affected, as it operates independently of the civilian air traffic control system.

The Greek Air Traffic Controllers Association accuses the administration of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) of chronic inaction and calls for an immediate upgrade of equipment. /CNA
