German Foreign Minister: NATO can strengthen Greenland's defense if

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has said that Greenland belongs to Denmark and that the NATO alliance could hold talks to strengthen its defense if necessary.

The statement comes after US President Donald Trump repeated his threats to take control of Greenland, a prospect that has alarmed NATO allies and gained more weight after he carried out his threat to overthrow Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

Trump has repeatedly said he wants to take control of Greenland, an ambition he first expressed in 2019 during his first term in office.

Speaking to reporters in Lithuania, Wadephul said Germany had questions about Maduro's departure and stressed that the Venezuelan people should determine the future of their country through free and fair elections. The minister also noted that Greenland is part of Denmark.

"And since Denmark is a NATO member, Greenland, in principle, will be under NATO's care for its defense. And if there are further requests for strengthening defense efforts in relation to Greenland, then we should discuss this within the framework of the Alliance ," Wadephul concluded without giving details on the nature of these talks. /CNA
