UN Security Council Meeting/ Guterres: Concerned by the impact of US actions in

The United Nations Security Council is holding a meeting today to discuss the latest developments in Venezuela.

At the meeting, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was concerned that the rules of international law had not been respected during US military actions in Venezuela.

During his statement, Guterres emphasized that international law is the foundation for maintaining international peace and security.

He also expressed concerns about the effects of detaining Venezuela's ousted leader, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores.

"I am deeply concerned about the potential intensification of instability in the country, the potential impact on the region, and the precedent this could set for how relations between states develop."

Venezuela has experienced decades of internal instability and social and economic turmoil. Democracy has been undermined.

Millions of its people have fled the country. The situation is critical, but it is still possible to prevent a wider and more destructive fire. In situations as confusing, as complex, as the one we are facing now, it is important to stick to principles.

"International law contains tools to address issues such as illicit drug trafficking, resource disputes and human rights concerns ," Guterres said. /CNA
