Polar bear injures three members of a family in Siberia, including a child

A polar bear has injured three members of the same family, including a child, in northern Siberia. The attack occurred in a fishing area about 40 kilometers from the village of Nosok, in the Krasnoyarsk region of eastern Siberia, almost 2,700 kilometers from Moscow.

"Three people, aged 11, 20 and 43, were injured," the local branch of the Interior Ministry said in a post on the Telegram platform.

According to the ministry, a local police officer and local residents rescued the family by scaring the polar bear away with a vehicle.

Attacks by polar bears on humans are very rare. However, experts point out that melting ice due to climate change is forcing them closer to populated areas in search of food.

In February 2019, Russian authorities declared a state of emergency on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in the Arctic due to the influx of dozens of aggressive polar bears looking for food. /CNA
