Protests in Iran / Death toll rises

Anti-government demonstrations continue in Iran. According to eyewitnesses, spontaneous protests broke out in the Grand Bazaar in the capital, Tehran. According to media reports, there were clashes between demonstrators and security forces. The latter used tear gas and dispersed the participants in the action. The market was closed.

At least 35 people have been killed in protests in Iran so far, activists say. Among them are 29 demonstrators, four children and two members of the Iranian security forces, according to the US-based human rights network HRANA. In addition, more than 1,200 people have been arrested during demonstrations against the authoritarian regime across the country.

The group relies on a network of activists inside Iran and has provided accurate information about past unrest. According to them, protests have taken place in at least 88 cities in recent days.

The semi-official Fars News Agency, considered closely linked to Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, reported late Monday that about 250 police officers and 45 members of the Revolutionary Guard's volunteer Basij unit had been wounded.

Justice announces harsh crackdown
The cause of the protests was, more than a week ago, a shock in the Iranian currency market, which led angry traders in Tehran to spontaneously take to the streets. Meanwhile, the national currency, the rial, reached a historically low level. The demonstrations quickly turned into political protests, which, as in the past, are being harshly persecuted by the state.

On Monday, the Islamic Republic's judiciary announced it would act without mercy. According to HRANA, students have joined protests at at least 17 universities across the country./DW
