Kosovo receives anti-tank systems from Turkey

Kosovo has received a shipment of OMTAS anti-tank missile systems from Turkey, authorities said on January 6. Acting Defense Minister Ejup Makedonci said the shipment was contracted with Turkish state-owned manufacturer Roktesan in December 2023.

"OMTAS [Orta Menzilli Tanksavar Silah] is a modern medium-range anti-tank missile system, developed to neutralize modern armored vehicles, including tanks with reactive protection, as well as military defensive fortifications," said Maqedonci.

According to him, increasing the variety and quantity of anti-tank systems for the Kosovo Security Force aims to "cover different operating distances, terrains and threat scenarios, increasing operational flexibility."

The Macedonian did not say how many systems Kosovo received, nor how much they cost.

According to Roktesan's website, OMTAS is effective against armored vehicles and can be used both day and night, regardless of weather conditions.

It can be launched from military vehicles and tripod platforms.

This system has a range of 0.2 to 4 kilometers and weighs 35 kilograms (missile including launch tube). The system has a diameter of 160 millimeters and a length of 1.8 meters.

In recent years, Kosovo has accelerated its armament, purchasing weapons mainly from the United States and Turkey, including missiles and drones.

Kosovo is in the process of transforming the KSF into an army. The effort began in 2018 and is expected to last ten years. /REL
