Border dispute/ Trump: Thai and Cambodian leaders want peace

US President Donald Trump spoke today with the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand in an attempt to broker a ceasefire between the two countries, which have been at war since Thursday over a border dispute.

So far, the fighting has killed 33 people.

"I just spoke with the Prime Minister of Cambodia to stop the war with Thailand. I am currently calling the interim Prime Minister of Thailand to also request a ceasefire and an end to the war," Trump wrote in a post on the website 'Truth Social'.

In a separate post a few minutes later, he spoke of a very good conversation with the Thai Prime Minister.

"Thailand, like Cambodia, wants a ceasefire and PEACE," he added.

Trump said the leaders of the two Asian countries had agreed to meet and work toward peace. He added that once that happens, he looks forward to finalizing trade deals between the United States and the two countries.

A long-running border dispute sparked hostilities on Thursday involving warplanes, tanks, artillery and ground forces. /CNA
