For golf, politics and trade/ Trump embarks on a 5-day trip to Scotland

US President Donald Trump will depart for Scotland this Friday for a five-day trip where he will visit his golf resorts in Turnberry and Aberdeen, as well as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the leader of the Scottish government, First Minister John Sweeney.

While it is not clear on what dates he will meet with British leaders, one topic of conversation expected to be at the top of the list is the US-UK trade deal.

The UK is one of the few countries with which the US has advanced its trade deals on relatively friendly terms, signing a deal called the "Economic Prosperity Agreement" last month, which agreed to lower tariffs.

White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt also told reporters last week that Trump and Starmer will meet to refine the excellent trade deal that was brokered, although the White House did not respond to questions about what specifically will be discussed over the weekend.

"The UK is the only country to have secured this deal with the US, cutting car export tariffs from 27.5% to 10%, saving manufacturers hundreds of millions each year and protecting hundreds of thousands of jobs. At the same time, the aerospace sector has seen the removal of 10% tariffs on goods such as engines and aircraft parts, helping companies such as Rolls Royce to be more competitive and allowing them to continue to be at the forefront of innovation," the British government said in a statement.

In addition to geopolitical talks, Trump is expected to play a round of golf at one of his courses when he visits his clubs, as he did in 2018 when he visited the historic golf resort and hotel at Turnberry. /CNA
