Plane with 50 people on board crashes in Russia/ No survivors reported

An Antonov An-24 passenger plane carrying about 50 people crashed in eastern Russia on Thursday and initial reports said all those on board were killed, Russian emergency services officials said.

The burning fuselage of the Soviet-era plane, which was nearly 50 years old, was spotted on the ground by a helicopter and rescue teams were rushing to the scene.

The plane, whose tail number indicated it was built in 1976, operated on a Siberian-based airline called Angara.

The plane was en route from the city of Blagoveshchensk to Tynda and disappeared from radar screens as it approached Tynda, a remote town in the Amur region bordering China.

According to preliminary data, there were 43 passengers on board, including five children, and six crew members, said Vasily Orlov, the regional governor.

The Ministry of Emergencies estimated the number of people on board somewhat lower, at around 40.

The wreckage of the plane was found on a hill about 15 km from Tynda.

"During the search operation, a Mi-8 helicopter belonging to Rossaviatsiya discovered the body of the aircraft, which was on fire. Rescue teams continue to go to the crash site," Yuliya Petina, an emergency services official, wrote on Telegram./ CNA
