Death toll from violence in southern Syria reaches over 1,300

The death toll from weeks of fighting in the mainly Druze-populated Suwayda province in southern Syria has passed 1,300.

This was stated by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights - a monitoring group - as the group continues to confirm deaths that occurred before the ceasefire came into effect last weekend.

The observer said that the victims included 933 Druze members, 533 of them fighters and 300 civilians, as well as 196 who were “executed without trial by defense and Interior Ministry personnel.”

The new figure also includes 423 members of the government security forces and 35 Sunni Bedouins, three of them civilians who, according to the Britain-based Observatory, "were executed by Druze fighters."

According to the monitor, 15 members of government forces were also killed in Israeli airstrikes.

The week-long clashes, which began on July 13, initially involved Druze fighters and Sunni Bedouin tribes, but government forces intervened on the side of the latter, according to witnesses, experts and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

A ceasefire came into effect on July 20, after Bedouin and tribal fighters withdrew from the town of Suweida and Druze groups regained control. Meanwhile, government forces have been deployed in parts of the province.

On Tuesday, the United Nations announced the relocation of staff and their families from Suweida, adding that they have delivered a new aid shipment to the Syrian Red Crescent, aid destined for Suweida./rel
