US and Germany agree to deliver 5 Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine

Germany and the United States have agreed to deliver five Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced.

Speaking during the 29th Ukraine Defense Contact Group, Pistorius said he reached the agreement with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during a recent trip to Washington.

The announcement from Pistorius also comes after US President Donald Trump said on July 11 that Washington would send advanced weapons, including Patriots, to Ukraine via NATO, marking a sharp 180-degree turn after a brief pause in weapons deliveries from the Pentagon.

The Patriot missile system can detect and intercept a wide range of incoming air targets, particularly high-altitude ballistic missiles, and is considered one of the best in the world, at a time when Moscow is ramping up its nighttime missile and drone attacks amid its all-out war against Ukraine, which has now entered its fourth year.

The announcement comes as Russia is ramping up its campaign of long-range attacks on Ukraine, including the use of ballistic missiles that only the Patriot system can shoot down.

On Monday night, Russian attacks hit the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, killing one person and wounding at least six, according to authorities./CNA
