Riots in Limoges, France/ 100 young people attack moving cars, 9 injured

Around 100 masked men, armed with fireworks and other objects, attacked moving vehicles in Limoges, central France, during clashes with police, injuring nine police officers.

According to local authorities, the incidents began when a neighborhood in Limoges reported that a hundred people had blocked the highway and attacked passing cars, mainly with fireworks.

"There were 100-150 people in masks, armed with Molotov cocktails, fireworks, stones, iron bars, baseball bats," said Laurent Nanto, secretary of the local Alliance police union.

The police responded with rubber bullets and tear gas, and the clashes ended.

"Some of the cars were with families, there were small children inside. None of the drivers were injured, but many were terrified," the prosecutor's office said.

Eight of the nine injured police officers have tinnitus and the ninth has a wound to his hand, Limoges prosecutors said.

On July 14, France's national holiday, there was more unrest in the same area.

The Interior Ministry announced that a special police force will be deployed in the city to maintain order. /CNA
