Police detain Petkovic's aide after anti-KLA speech

Igor Popovic, representative of the Office for Kosovo in the Government of Serbia, was arrested on Friday by the Kosovo Police, following a statement he made in Rahovec against the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), media in Kosovo report.

Popovic is an assistant to Petar Petkovic, the head of this Office in Serbia.

Throughout his statement, Popovic called the KLA a "terrorist" organization.

The Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) was a political-military force that fought for the liberation of Kosovo from Serbian rule in the period 1990-1999.

Radio Free Europe has requested confirmation from the Kosovo Police regarding the reports of the arrest, but has not yet received a response.

The categories that emerged from the war, the Organization of KLA Veterans (OVL-KLA), the Association of War Invalids and the Association of Martyrs' Families, have reacted harshly to, as they said, the presence of Petkovic's aide in Kosovo.

"This is the mentality of the subordinates of the former Serbian leader, Slobodan Milosevic, who is today represented by the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu?i?, a former minister of that genocidal regime," these organizations said in a Facebook post.

They also said that "any attempt to provoke, to smear the KLA and to use the territory of Kosovo for anti-national propaganda is unacceptable and must be resolutely stopped."

During the war in Kosovo in 1998/99, over 13,000 civilians were killed, while thousands more went missing.

Around 1,600 people, mostly Albanians, have not yet been found.

Over the years, justice authorities in Kosovo have charged or convicted several people for war crimes./ REL
