Dutch school teacher stabbed to death/Three suspects arrested

A teacher was stabbed and seriously injured at a musical performance by primary school students in a city in the Netherlands, Dutch police said in a statement on Thursday.

The 53-year-old teacher was stabbed while trying to intervene in a fight between three men at a cultural center in Alblasserdam, police said, adding that several people witnessed the stabbing and he was offered counseling immediately after the incident.

Children in primary schools in the Netherlands traditionally give performances for their parents in the last week before the summer holidays.

Three suspects have since been arrested. A 44-year-old man was detained near the cultural center shortly after the stabbing.

The other man fled but was quickly arrested, police said. The reason for the altercation that preceded the stabbing was not immediately clear.

The suspected role of three men in the stabbing is being investigated and their identities have not been revealed, in accordance with Dutch privacy guidelines. Police also seized two vehicles as part of their investigation.

Alblasserdam is a small town famous for the World Heritage-listed Kinderdijk windmills, located on the outskirts. /CNA
