To reduce the national deficit/ French Prime Minister Bayrou proposes shortening

France's Prime Minister, François Bayrou, has presented plans to cut 43.8 billion euros from the national budget, warning that debt poses a 'mortal' risk to the country.

The cuts include reducing the number of people employed in the civil service and a so-called "solidarity contribution" for the wealthiest, as well as removing tax breaks for business expenses for pensioners.

He also proposed removing two official holidays, citing Easter Monday and May 8 as possible contenders for removal.

Bayrou said this would make it possible to increase productivity without increasing taxes or VAT.

France's public deficit reached 5.8% of GDP in 2024, reaching a total of 168.6 billion euros, a figure well above the maximum allowed by EU rules.

In his announcement, Bayrou outlined significant budget cuts aimed at cutting tens of billions of euros, aiming to reduce the deficit to 5.4% of GDP this year and 4.6% in 2026./CNA
