Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal submits resignation letter

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced on Tuesday that he had submitted a letter of resignation, as part of the country's largest wartime government reshuffle expected this week.

Zelenskyy has reportedly been considering replacing Shmyhal with Svyrydenko as prime minister.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to replace Shmyhal. Svyrydenko, who is also the economy minister, is a close and long-time ally of Zelenskyy.

Shmyhal, who has been in office since March 2020, is expected to be appointed as Ukraine's new defense minister, Zelensky said.

Parliament will vote on Svyrydenko's nomination later this week. Zelensky said he had already discussed priority tasks for the next six months with him.

"We are preparing the initial steps of the renewed government," the president said on the Telegram app, posting a photo from their meeting in his office.

The main tasks would be to increase domestic arms production and implement reforms to unlock Ukraine's economic potential. /CNA
