Tourist boat sinks in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, killing 34

At least 34 people have died and eight others are missing after a tourist boat carrying more than 50 people, including children, sank in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam.

"On the afternoon of July 19, the Wonder Sea tourist boat with 53 people on board capsized. The coast guard rescued 11 people and recovered 34 bodies," the news website VNExpress reported.

The boat was carrying 48 passengers and five crew members. At least 20 of the tourists were young children.

The boat was capsized by a sudden and torrential downpour that began while on a tour of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"I took a deep breath, swam through a corridor, dived, and then surfaced. I was screaming for help and was pulled into a boat by soldiers who were there," a 10-year-old boy told state media VietnamNet.

The rescue operation continued to find the remaining eight missing.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and asked the Ministries of Defense and Public Security to organize search and rescue operations. /CNA
