Trump sues Wall Street Journal for $10 billion

US President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch, two Wall Street Journal journalists and the publication's owner, News Corp.

The US president has accused the individuals named of defamation, claiming that they acted with malicious intent and caused him significant financial and reputational damage.

The lawsuit, which was filed in Miami, seeks at least $10 billion (£7.5 billion) in damages.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the lawsuit "historic legal action," which he said was brought on behalf of himself and all Americans who "will no longer tolerate the abusive misdeeds of the Fake News Media."

"I hope Rupert and his 'friends' are looking forward to the many hours of testimony and statements they will have to give in this case," he wrote.

This comes after Trump claimed that a letter he allegedly wrote to pedophile Jeffrey Epstein was "fake" and said he would sue "the back" Rupert Murdoch, who owns the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which first published the story.

The publication had said that Trump wrote the letter as part of a collection that Epstein's ex-girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, planned to give him as a gift for his 50th birthday in 2003.

It was claimed that the message, supposedly from Trump, contained a few lines of typewritten text, ending with: "May every day be another wonderful secret."

The text was adapted from what appeared to be a hand-drawn sketch of a naked woman, the WSJ claimed. The letter also reportedly contained the signature "Donald."

Donald Trump immediately denied writing the letter when the WSJ article was published Thursday evening.

"The Wall Street Journal published a fake letter, supposedly about Epstein. These are not my words, not the way I speak. Also, I don't draw. I told Rupert Murdoch it was a hoax, that he shouldn't have published this fake story. But he did, and now I'm going to sue him and his third-rate newspaper," he wrote on Truth Social./ CNA
