At least 26 reported killed in Gaza

The Gaza Civil Defense Agency said on July 19 that Israeli strikes had killed at least 26 people and wounded more than 100 others near two aid centers in the southern Palestinian territory.

Agency spokesman Mahmoud Basal told AFP that 22 people were killed near an aid center southwest of Khan Yunis, while four others were killed near a center northwest of Rafah, blaming "Israeli attacks" for both incidents.

The Israeli military said it is investigating these claims.

Due to restrictions imposed on international media, reports of the number of casualties and details of the attacks reported by the civil protection agency and other parties cannot be independently confirmed.

The war in Gaza, which was sparked by the attack by Hamas – the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union – on Israel on October 7, 2023, has caused a severe humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave.

Over 2 million people living in Gaza are facing shortages of food and other basic supplies, as doctors have reported a sharp increase in cases of malnutrition.

Reports of attacks on people seeking aid near distribution centers are daily, with Palestinian authorities blaming Israel for these cases.

A day earlier, the Gaza Civil Defense Agency reported that nine people were killed near an aid distribution center northwest of Rafah.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation – which is backed by the US and Israel – took over the distribution of aid in Gaza in late May. The foundation said 20 people died in Khan Yunis on Wednesday. But the foundation blamed “gunmen affiliated with Hamas” for their deaths, claiming they caused “chaotic and dangerous scenes” and “shot at people seeking help.”

Earlier this week, the United Nations said it had recorded 875 deaths in Gaza while trying to receive aid, including 674 "near Gaza Humanitarian Foundation centers" since the foundation began operations to distribute aid./ REL
