Conflict in Syria/ Authorities report situation under control

The situation in Suwayda province is reportedly under control after days of deadly violence between Druze and Sunni Muslim Bedouin groups, the Syrian state news agency SANA reported, citing the Interior Ministry, on July 20.

In Suweida, which is predominantly inhabited by Druze, there are no longer any tribal fighters and the fighting has ended, the agency reported.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported a calm situation.

The fighting in Suweida, which erupted a week ago, left hundreds dead and caused a dire humanitarian situation and a mass exodus of civilians from the province, according to activists.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanded that " the fighting stop immediately" , calling for an end to the rapes and massacres of innocent people.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights – which relies on a network of reporters inside Syria – almost 1,000 people have been killed since July 13 as a result of fighting in Suweida, executions and Israeli airstrikes.

The Druze are a religious minority of Shiite Islam and live mainly in Syria, but also in Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. Suwayda is their stronghold.

After the violence erupted, Syrian government troops intervened.

Israel said it had an obligation to protect the Druze community, many of whom serve in the Israeli military. Earlier this week, Israel carried out airstrikes in Suwayda and on government institutions in Damascus.

The situation remains fragile in Syria under the new interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who took power after the overthrow of ruler Bashar al-Assad six months ago.

Although the new administration has promised to restore stability, ethnic clashes, militia violence and terrorist attacks continue in this country./ REL
