New anti-corruption law in Ukraine/ Von del Leyen demands explanations from

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to express her strong concerns and demand explanations over a new law that weakens the independence of two Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies: the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office.

Under the legislation, passed by the Ukrainian parliament on Tuesday and signed by Zelensky hours later, both agencies are placed under the direct supervision of the prosecutor general, who is a political appointee.

The attorney general will be allowed to pick and choose cases and reassign them to other state entities, which critics say risks empowering the executive branch to influence investigations, especially high-profile ones.

"President von der Leyen conveyed her strong concerns about the consequences of the changes and she asked the Ukrainian government for explanations," a Commission spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The direct intervention of the European Commission president represents a new escalation in the unexpected clash between Brussels and Kiev.

It is the first time since the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia that the executive has expressed such clear criticism of Zelensky's government.

On Tuesday, Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, expressed her strong disapproval in an attempt to prevent Kiev from moving forward with the controversial bill, which passed through parliament with a speed that seemed to take Brussels by surprise. /CNA
