Rare visit by an American president/ Trump visits the Federal Reserve

US President Donald Trump has planned to visit the headquarters of the US Federal Reserve.

The rare visit to the Federal Reserve comes as Trump and his administration are increasing criticism of Reserve Chief Jerome Powell over building renovations that are allegedly hurting the budget.

Trump said on Social Truth that he would meet with Powell when he arrives at the Federal Reserve. He will be joined on the tour by Senators Tim Scott, R-South Carolina, and Thom Tillis, R-North Carolina, Budget Director Russ Vought, FHFA Director William Pulte, and Trump’s appointees to the National Capital Planning Committee. Many of these officials have been Powell’s most vocal critics in recent weeks.

Presidents rarely visit the Federal Reserve in an official capacity. That's because the central bank seeks to be independent of the White House, a separation seen as essential to ensuring its actions are free from political influence.

Presidential visits to the Federal Reserve's main building, a short drive from the White House, are rare. The last president to do so was George W. Bush, who attended the 2006 inauguration of his former economic adviser, Ben Bernanke, as chairman. Only two other presidents have made the trip: Gerald Ford in 1975 and Franklin D. Roosevelt to inaugurate the building in 1937. /CNA
