Large fires in Greece/ Flames threaten people, nature, homes

Fires are spreading across Greece this Saturday, threatening human lives, livestock, nature, industrial properties and homes, amid a prolonged heat wave.

Fires broke out on several fronts in Messinia, southern Greece, Evrytania, central Greece, the islands of Evia and Kythera, in central and southern Greece respectively, and Kastoria in northern Greece.

The areas of Kythera and Messinia were evacuated in the early afternoon as the fires approached the villages. The 112 emergency alert was also activated in Evia, where the area of Pissonas suffered serious damage and the village remained under high risk. More fires broke out in the afternoon near Kozani and Thessaloniki in northern Greece.

In Attica, the metropolitan area of Athens, dramatic efforts were being made to save homes from burning in Drosopigi and Kryoneri, which were also evacuated.

A large fire front that started in Drosopigi had reached the main square of Kryoneri and was burning houses.

The fire was fully active on two fronts, the second front being on the outskirts of the settlement of Drosopigi, where houses were under threat and a car had already been set ablaze. The situation is still difficult and unpredictable in terms of how it will develop, as the area is experiencing winds of magnitude 7-8 that resemble fiery explosions. /CNA
