Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said today that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky is possible only as a final step in negotiations to sign the relevant agreements.

"A high-level meeting can and should put a final point on the solution and record the modalities and agreements that will be developed during the work of the experts. It is impossible to do the opposite," Peskov told reporters.

The official said it is impossible for such a meeting to take place until the end of August, as the peace process is too complex to be completed in 30 days.

Peskov also said that his country's position is set out in the draft memorandum provided to Ukraine, which he previously said would be the subject of the recent peace talks in Istanbul.

He noted that peace proposals from the two countries are currently "diametrically opposed" and that there is much work to be done. /CNA
