Zelensky: Ukrainian forces are holding back Russia's summer offensive

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian forces are thwarting Russia's attempts over the summer to break through defenses along some parts of the front line.

"They are not making progress. It is very difficult for our guys there. And it is difficult everywhere. It is also very difficult for the Russians - and that is good for us," Zelensky told reporters.

With the war now in its fourth year following Russia's February 2022 full-scale invasion of its neighbor, the effort is draining resources on both sides, although Russia has more resources and men to support its fight.

Russia has claimed the occupation of several villages and neighborhoods in recent weeks, but no heavily defended urban areas have fallen to its troops.

"It happened five to seven times recently, sometimes with just two or six people. Once they tried to hold a position with 12 people and they were all eliminated by our defenders," Zelensky said.

Zelensky described the situation in the northeastern border region of Sumy as much better than in recent months, noting the progress of Ukrainian forces over the past six weeks. /CNA
