Rare in New Delhi/ Fake ambassador arrested after 10 years

Indian police this week arrested a man near New Delhi who had posed as an ambassador to fictitious countries for 10 years, deceiving job seekers with promises of work abroad.

Harsh's Vardhan Zain, 47, had rented a house in Ghaziabad, a city about 30 kilometers from New Delhi in the state of Uttar Pradesh, police said in a press release.

He claimed to be the ambassador of "Western Arctic, Samborga, Pulvia and Londonia", non-existent countries.

He is accused of driving vehicles with fake diplomatic license plates and posting doctored photos of himself alongside senior Indian officials on social media to boost his credibility.

"His main activities were acting as a money broker to find work abroad for companies and individuals, as well as running a money transfer network through fictitious companies," police said after his arrest.

The fake ambassador is also accused of money laundering.

During the raids at his home, police seized the sum of 45,500 euros in banknotes, as well as forged passports and documents bearing the seals of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs./CNA
