Leaving the country/ 54 children swim from Morocco to Spain

At least 54 children and about 30 adults swam from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa amid rough seas and fog, Spanish television reported on Saturday.

Video from Spanish broadcaster RTVE showed Spanish Civil Guard boats transporting some of the swimmers to safety, while others continued to swim towards the enclave.

The children, most of them Moroccan nationals, were taken to temporary centers in Ceuta, where authorities have asked the central government for help in managing the latest wave of arrivals.

"Don't leave us alone. This is a state issue. This must be resolved," Juan Rivas from the regional government of Ceuta told reporters.

On August 26 last year, hundreds of migrants took to the water in thick fog to swim to Ceuta from neighboring Morocco, according to local police. In 2021, authorities found a child swimming on empty plastic bottles while trying to reach Ceuta./CNA
