Interior Minister: France may face violence because of the elections

France could face civil unrest and violence in connection with early elections, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Monday.

"It is possible that there will be very high tensions", Darmanin told "RTL radio", adding that the authorities are preparing for a "very sensitive" situation, since the vote will be held less than a month before the Games. Paris 2024 Olympics.

President Emmanuel Macron, who shocked the nation when he announced the decision to dissolve the French Parliament earlier this month, is not taking part in the election.

However, the election is seen as a referendum on the fate of Macron, who was once seen as a president capable of bridging political divides but whose popularity has now fallen after several political crises.

"I believe you," Macron told voters in a "letter to the French," which was published Sunday.

In the letter, he sought to present his camp, which in polls lags behind the far right and behind the newly formed leftist alliance, as the last hope for stability.

"I am not blind: I am aware of the democratic crisis", he added.

Macron also reiterated that he will hold the position of president until his term ends in 2027, regardless of the outcome of the election.

On June 9, Macron dissolved the French Parliament and called early elections, following the far-right party's landslide victory in the European Parliament elections.

France will hold early parliamentary elections on June 30 and July 7.

Polls suggest that the extreme right can win./ REL
