Despite their reduced numbers, red phone booths can still be seen in many locations across the UK as the cultural icons celebrate their centenary.

When people think of Great Britain, some may think of red buses, the Beatles or Buckingham Palace, while others may think of fish and chips, pubs or a strong sense of self-control.

However, perhaps the most iconic image remains the traditional red telephone booths, which have managed to survive despite their rare use in modern Britain.

Indeed the number of phone booths across the UK has shrunk fivefold in recent years, according to British Telecom (BT). Only 3,000 traditional red cabs remain.

At the end of life

Under existential threat, initially from mobiles, and even more so as smartphones began to dominate our lives, in 2008 BT introduced the Adopt a Booth programme, with more than 7,200 phone booths taken from communities across UK for just £1 (€1.17) each.

"Cabins can be adopted by community councils or parishes and registered charities," according to BT's website. As the classic cabin marks its 100th anniversary, a new push has been undertaken in Scotland.

"With the vast majority of people now using mobile phones and the significant improvements in mobile network coverage across the UK, we have continued to see a huge drop in the number of calls from payphones," said Michael Smy, BT project manager.

"With the iconic red cabin about to turn 100," he added, "it's a great opportunity These 'conversions' have transformed the famous red cabins to remind communities that they still want to keep their local cabin for pick it up for just £1. We've already seen some great cabin conversions across the UK that have become valuable community assets."

in a variety of spaces in useful and cultural facilities: from defibrillator units and libraries, to mini art galleries and local museums.

BT will continue to provide electricity, free of charge, to power the light for adopted phone booths.

The story of the red telephone box

The name Sir Giles Gilbert Scott may not be familiar to many, but 2024 marks 100 years since his design was chosen as Britain's first red telephone box. Red was chosen because it made it easy to spot.

They have since become cultural icons, with the telephone booth perhaps Scott's most memorable and enduring achievement, significant for an architect whose works include Cambridge University Library, Battersea Train Station and Liverpool Cathedral.

Scott's design was the second version as dissatisfaction with the original design meant an alternative was sought, which finally hit the road in 1926. Ten years later, Scott refined his design to mark King George V's Silver Jubilee. The iconic status of red telephone booths was enhanced in post-war Britain, reaching living rooms around the world through films, music videos and cult TV series such as The Ladykillers from 1955.

The number of phone booths across the UK peaked in the 1990s at around 100,000.

However, despite their historic status, there has been a significant decline in the use of payphones across Britain, with 98% of the population now owning a mobile phone.

Although there was a time when people queued up to use the phone, some booths still attract a crowd of people around them. Such as the phone booth near the exit of Westminster tube station, which attracts crowds of tourists. Due to its proximity to Big Ben, it is possible to get the London landmark and the red telephone booth in one photo.

One TikTok user claimed to have waited in line for 45 minutes for a chance to take a picture with her, prompting one Londoner to comment: "The world has gone mad."

The red booths may no longer be needed to make phone calls, but since they have been turned into tiny homes for defibrillators, libraries or for social media use, it can be said that there is still life in them./ DW
