Bomb attacks in southern Iran claimed by the Islamic State (IS) militant group have killed 91 people, state media reported on January 6.

This figure represents an increase in the number of victims from the deadly explosions of January 3.

Two blasts in Kerman on Wednesday hit crowds of people attending a memorial ceremony near the grave of Qassem Soleimani, the Revolutionary Guard general who was killed by a US drone strike in Iraq in January 2020.

"The death toll from the terrorist incident has reached 91, as two people, including a child, who were in intensive care did not survive their injuries," a local health official was quoted as saying, according to Iran's state news agency. IRNA.

On Thursday, IS claimed responsibility for the blasts. In a statement, the militant group said two of its members "activated their explosive vests" amid "a large crowd of disbelievers gathered near the grave of their leader".

On Friday, Iran's Intelligence Ministry said that "one of the attackers" was "of Tajik nationality", while the identity of the second attacker has not yet been determined.

At least 11 suspects have been arrested in Iran, the ministry said.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and General Hossein Salami, who leads the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, also participated in the funeral of those killed in Saturday's explosions in Kerman.

Soleimani, before he was killed, was the leader of the Guards' Quds Force. In Iran, he is appreciated for his role in the fight against IS in Iraq and Syria./ REL
