A Turkish court ruled Friday to formally arrest 15 people and deport eight others suspected of links to Israel's Mossad secret service and attacks on Palestinians living in Turkey, it reported. state broadcaster TRT Haber.

Turkish authorities detained 34 people earlier this week after Ankara warned Israel of "severe consequences" if it tried to go after members of the militant group Hamas living outside the Palestinian territories, including in Turkey.

TRT Haber did not say what the court decided for the remaining 11 people, who were detained on January 2.

Turkey, unlike many Western allies and some Arab countries, does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization.

The suspects were arrested during raids in Istanbul and seven other provinces. They were allegedly planning to carry out activities including "surveillance" and "stalking, assault and kidnapping" of foreign nationals living in Turkey.

Turkey has sharply criticized Israel for bombing Gaza in its war against Hamas.

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has expressed a series of criticisms towards Israel, describing the actions of this country in Gaza as "genocide". He has called for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be prosecuted for "war crimes" and compared him to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Erdogan, whose government has hosted several Hamas officials in the past, also said that the radical Palestinian group is fighting for the liberation of its lands and its people./ REL
