China's Foreign Minister: Cooperation with the US is not an option, but an

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday that the most urgent task in relations between China and the United States is cooperation and fair understanding between the two sides, stressing that this is "no longer just an option" for the world.

Cooperation is "the fairest solution for China and the United States to get along," Wang said during a speech marking the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States.

"It can be said that China-US cooperation is no longer an option for both countries and even for the world, but an emergency that must be addressed seriously," said Wang.

Relations between the United States and China have been strained over a range of issues, including national security, global conflicts, trade restrictions, climate change and Taiwan.

Diplomatic disputes worsened last year after both countries accused each other of launching high-altitude balloons over each other's airspace.

Over the past week, the two superpowers have conducted military exercises in the South China Sea, where disputes over disputed territory in the region are intensifying.

Wang said China hopes the US will soften its stance and respect the decisions made by the Chinese people and China's development path, including when it protects its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"We are willing to devote ourselves to building stable and sound China-US relations on the basis of mutual respect," he said.

The US and its allies have often said they are concerned about the continued strengthening of relations between China and Russia.
