Consequences of the earthquake in Japan

Rescue teams in Japan are scrambling to find 242 people missing after a devastating earthquake.

On Friday, the death toll from the 7.6-magnitude earthquake on the remote Noto peninsula rose to 92.

Japan's defense forces doubled the number of troops participating in the rescue and relief effort to 4,600, Kyodo news agency reported.

Many people are believed to be trapped under their collapsed homes - mainly in the cities of Suzu and Wajima. 

Tens of thousands of residents are still without power and water, while hundreds remain cut off from aid due to landslides and blocked roads.

The earthquake on Monday evening also triggered a small tsunami that inundated at least 296 hectares (120 ha) of land, according to the Japanese ministry. / CNA
