The Italian Foreign Minister calls for the formation of the EU army

The European Union should form its own joint army that can play a peacekeeping role and prevent conflicts, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said.

In an interview with the Italian newspaper, La Stampa, Tajani said that closer European cooperation in the field of defense is a priority of the Forza Italia party, which he leads.

"If we want to be peacekeepers in the world, we need a European army. This is an essential prerequisite to be able to have an effective European foreign policy", he said in the interview that was published on January 7.

"In a world with powerful players such as the United States, China, India, Russia - with crises from the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific - Italian, French or Slovenian citizens can only escape from something that already exists, namely the Union European", he added.

The issue of European defense cooperation has been high on the political agenda since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine almost two years ago.

However, efforts have focused more on NATO enlargement, with Finland – a member of the EU – joining the alliance last year and Sweden also on track to join NATO.

Tajani also said that the 27 EU states should improve their leadership and create a single presidency, not like the current structure, where the European Council has a president and the European Commission also has a president.

Tajani became leader of Forza Italia last year after the death of Silvio Berlusconi.

The European Parliament elections in June will be the first gauge of the party's popularity after losing its charismatic leader, Silvio Berlusconi./ REL
