A recent study shows that by 2040, Germany's population is expected to grow by only 0.6%. At the same time, the number of people of working age is expected to fall below 50%.

According to a study published by the Bertelsmann Foundation, Germany is expected to experience a slight population increase of 0.6% by 2040.

The forecast is based on data on births, deaths and migration provided by the Federal Statistical Office.

Geographical inequality

The largest population increase is expected in the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg with an increase of 4.6%. Berlin's population is expected to grow by 5.8%, and Hamburg, Germany's second largest city, is expected to grow by 3.5%.

While the population in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt is expected to have a decrease of 12.3% of the population.

Population decline is also predicted in the eastern states of Thuringia with 10.9% and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 7.3%.

Germany is getting old

Ralph Heck, chairman of the Bertelsmann Foundation, said that the increase in the number of elderly people in German society is visible in almost all federal states.

According to the study, the percentage of residents aged 65 and over will increase in Germany from 22% in 2020 to 28% in 2040.

In the same time frame, the percentage of people of working age will drop from 54 to 48%, while the percentage of younger age groups in the total population will remain almost unchanged.

"Dedicated strategies are now needed to develop an infrastructure suitable for older generations and to overcome the economic challenges that will arise," said Heck./ DW
