US wants construction workers/ Half a million additional workers needed

The United States is in dire need of construction workers, and while immigrants arriving in some of the nation's cities in recent months may help alleviate that problem, not everyone agrees with that solution, according to VOA.

La Colmena Community Employment Center in Staten Island is a New York City non-profit organization that also provides training for immigrants.

Among the attendees of the mandatory courses for construction workers in New York, there are also women like 20-year-old Ecuadorian Marilyn Villamar. La Colmena Center says the courses usually cost $600 to $1,000, but the organization offers them for free and in Spanish.

"This course has helped me by giving me a job opportunity. I will try to find a job in construction", says Villamar.

The construction industry needs more than half a million extra workers by 2024 to meet market demands, say leaders of the Association of Builders and Contractors. This figure does not include the industry's normal growth rate of about 200,000 to 300,000 workers a year.

Experts explain that the coronavirus pandemic forced many people to retire early and the insufficient level of young workers in the construction industry is expected to cause a structural shortage of workers.

However, some local politicians are skeptical that it belongs to the newcomers, and claim that spending taxpayers' money on newly arrived immigrants is an injustice to American citizens./ CNA
