Trump moderates stance: Abortion laws only at state level, not federal
Former President Donald Trump

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said abortion laws should be determined by American states.

His stance is considered more moderate in the run-up to the presidential election, as he avoids proposing a federal ban.

In a video he posted on the social networking platform, the former US president said he supports exceptions in cases of rape, incest and to protect the life of the mother. He also reiterated that he supports access to IVF.

Donald Trump did not mention a possible ban on abortion at the federal level after a certain number of weeks of pregnancy. In doing so, he defied the expectations of his religious and conservative supporters that he would seek federal restrictions if he were to return to the White House.

Trump, who has previously signaled his support for a federal ban on abortion after 15 weeks, emphasized the importance of winning the vote in his much-anticipated statement on the issue.

"You have to follow your heart in this matter.

But remember, we also have to win the election to restore our civilization and, in fact, to save our country, which is now unfortunately a nation in decline," Trump said in the video.

However, to appease ultra-conservatives, Donald Trump said he was responsible for the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned the landmark decision in Roe v. Wade and ended the federal right to abortion, indirectly referring to the conservative justices he chose for the US Supreme Court who made it possible.

The court's ruling sparked a voter backlash widely attributed to the limited gains Republicans made in the 2022 midterm congressional elections and led Democrats to victories in several state elections last year.

"This 50-year battle over Roe v. Wade took it out of federal hands and into the hands, hearts, minds and votes of the people in every state. It was really something. Now it's up to the states to do the right thing."

My point now is that we have abortion where everyone wants it legally, the states will determine it by vote or legislation or maybe both.

And whatever they decide must be the law of the land. In this case, the law of the land," Trump said. / CNA
