The Israeli army has withdrawn all ground troops from the southern Gaza Strip except for one brigade, an army spokesman announced on Sunday.

The Israeli military has no further details on the matter.

It is not clear whether this withdrawal will affect Israel's ongoing threats to occupy the town of Rafah in the south of the Palestinian enclave.

An Israeli brigade usually consists of several thousand troops.

Israeli officials say they intend to occupy Rafah in order to destroy Hamas - the terrorist group designated by the United States and the European Union.

The troop withdrawal comes as Egypt prepares to host a new round of talks on a ceasefire and hostage release deal.

Israel's war in Gaza, which began six months ago when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, has been centered in the south of the Palestinian enclave in recent months.

Rafah is the last place where more than 1 million Palestinians have fled to seek refuge from the relentless Israeli bombardment of Gaza.

More than 1,200 people were killed and about 250 others were kidnapped during the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, according to Israeli officials.

Israel retaliated by carrying out air and ground attacks that have resulted in the killing of more than 33,000 Palestinians, according to local authorities in the Gaza Strip.

The fighting has displaced more than 80 percent of Gaza's population and hundreds of thousands are on the brink of starvation, the United Nations and international aid agencies have said. /REL
