Tens of thousands of people protest in Budapest against Viktor Orban

Tens of thousands of citizens protested against the government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in central Budapest on Saturday.

The protest was led by a lawyer once close to the administration, who recently created a political movement to challenge the prime minister.

Protesters marched towards Parliament in warm spring weather, some chanting "we are not afraid" and "Orban, resign!"

Many were dressed in the national colors of red, white and green, or carried national flags, symbols that Orbán's party has used as its own for the past two decades.

"These are the national colors of Hungary, not the government's," said 24-year-old Lejla, who traveled to Budapest from Sopron, a city on the country's western border.

The march was led by Peter Magyar, 43, who was once married to Orbán's former justice minister, Judit Varga, and intends to challenge Orbán with his new party.

Magyar became widely known in February when he made shocking comments about the inner workings of the Government. He accused Antal Rogan, the minister who heads Orban's office, of being in charge of a centralized propaganda machine.

He also released a recording of a conversation with his ex-wife in which she details an attempt by a senior aide to Orbán's chief of staff to intervene in a bribery case. Prosecutors are investigating his statements.

This investigation is taking place at a politically sensitive time for Orban, as the parliamentary elections in the European Union will be held in June. This case also follows a sexual abuse scandal that resulted in the ousting of two of his important political allies – the former president and Vargan – in February.

According to a poll by Median, published in March, 68 percent of voters have heard that Magyar has entered politics and 13 percent said there is a possibility that they will support his party./ Rel
