Attack on the school / Finnish Minister: It is not time to talk about the gun

Finland already has a pretty "strict" gun law and now is not the right time to talk about tightening it, Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said on Friday.

She said this a few days after a gun attack at an elementary school near the capital Helsinki.

On Tuesday, a 12-year-old boy shot dead a sixth-grade student and seriously injured two students, including a girl from Kosovo.

On Thursday, the Finnish Police said that one of the injured girls has dual citizenship, Kosovar and Finnish. She said that both seriously injured girls are still being treated in the hospital.

The police said that the 12-year-old, who has been arrested, took a relative's revolver to the "Viertola" elementary school near Helsinki and shot three students and threatened several others.

According to data from the Finnish Ministry of the Interior, more than 1.5 million firearms licenses have been issued in the country. About 430,000 people are licensed to carry weapons in Finland.

Finland is among the European Union countries with the highest rate of civilians carrying firearms per capita, according to a 2018 study, but Rantanen said the high number of guns does not make Finland a "violent country".

"The police investigation is at an early stage and, even if they make rapid progress, this in no way means that now is the right time to comment on whether we should tighten our gun laws," Rantanen told Reuters./ REL
