Blinken: Ukraine will eventually join NATO

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Ukraine will eventually join NATO, as support for the country remains "steady" among the Alliance's member countries.

"Ukraine is going to join NATO. Our goal at the summit is to help bridge that integration," Blinken told reporters in Brussels.

Russia and NATO are in "direct confrontation" today, the Kremlin spokesman said on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the US-led alliance.

NATO's eastward expansion is an obsession for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who two years ago declared war on Ukraine, declaring his intention to prevent the alliance from approaching Russia's borders.

Instead, the war has mobilized NATO, which has expanded again with the addition of Finland and Sweden.

"In fact, relations today have fallen to the level of direct confrontation," Peskov commented.

NATO is "already involved in the conflict involving Ukraine and continues to move toward our borders and expand its military infrastructure toward our borders," Peskov said.

Putin has repeatedly stressed that Russia was cheated by the West in the wake of the Cold War after the Soviet-era Warsaw Pact fell apart, but NATO expanded eastward, welcoming former pact members and the three Baltic states, which were part of the Soviet Union.

The West opposes this version, saying that NATO is a defensive alliance and that membership in it is a democratic choice of countries that have shaken communist rule for decades./ CNA
