The court rejects former President Trump's request to delay one of his

A New York judge on Wednesday rejected former President Donald Trump's request to delay his trial date on charges related to hush-hush payments to a pornographic actress.

Former President Trump had asked that the April 15 trial be delayed until the United States Supreme Court considers the claim of presidential immunity in another criminal case.

The court is expected to hear on April 25 the former US president's arguments that he is immune from federal prosecution for trying to overturn the 2020 primary election that he lost to Democratic President Joe Biden.

His defense attorneys in the New York case had asked Judge Juan Merchan to delay the trial until the Supreme Court concludes its review, arguing that it was important because prosecutors want to present as evidence statements Mr. Trump made when he was president. from 2017 to 2021.

In a ruling Wednesday, Judge Merchan said Mr. Trump had waited too long to bring the case.

"The defendant had a number of opportunities to raise the presidential immunity claim, much earlier than March 7, 2024," Judge Merchan said.

Todd Blanche, a lawyer for Mr. Trump, declined to comment.

Mr. Trump, the Republican candidate expected to challenge President Biden in the November 5 election, has pleaded not guilty to each of the criminal cases he faces.

The New York case may be the only one he will stand trial for before the election.

He is accused of falsifying business records in order to keep secret a $130,000 payment that his former lawyer Michael Cohen made to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence before the 2016 election in connection with a intimate relationship she says she had with Mr. Trump in 2006. Former President Trump denies having such a relationship with the actress whose real name is Stephanie Clifford./ VOA
