Ukraine starts registration of war damages

Kyiv has opened an "online" Register of Damages and called on Ukrainians to "seek compensation for damage or destruction of residential property" caused during the Russian occupation of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, the Minister of Ukrainian foreigner, Dmytro Kuleba.

Through a post on "X", formerly known as "Twitter", Kuleba wrote that while addressing the Conference in The Hague on April 2, he emphasized that "Ukrainians need justice now. Not in the distant future."

In the final statement of the conference on Justice for Ukraine, representatives of 44 states condemned "acts of aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine" and confirmed their commitment to the creation of a "special tribunal for the investigation and prosecution of the crime of aggression against Ukraine".

The statement said that Russia must face all "legal consequences for all its illegal international acts... including reparations for injuries or any damage caused by these acts."

In a social media post, Dutch Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot, who hosted the conference, praised the registry created by Kiev, saying it was a step forward "to get to accountability and compensation."

On April 3, Kuleba participates in the meeting of NATO's chief diplomats in Brussels. The meeting comes a day after NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg proposed the creation of a five-year, $100 billion fund to provide arms to Ukraine.

A NATO source told reporters that "foreign ministers will discuss the best way to organize NATO's support for Ukraine, to make the support more robust, predictable and long-term."

However, decisions on this fund are not expected to be made until the NATO summit that will be held in July in Washington, United States./ REL
