Florida board restriction, Biden goes against the Court: The decision is
US President, Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden called on Florida voters today to make sure their "voices are heard" in November after the state Supreme Court upheld a law banning the state from abortion after six weeks of pregnancy.

Biden called this decision taken yesterday "extreme" and "scandalous".

The head of the United States emphasized in a press release that such restrictions put "the health and lives of millions of women" at risk.

The Democratic president, who has made abortion rights a central issue of his campaign for a second term, assured that he stands "with the vast majority of Americans who support women's right to choose, including in Florida, where voters will be able to express themselves in November".

The Southeastern state's Supreme Court made two separate decisions, one that limited access to abortion to very strict limits and the other that leaves it up to voters to make the final decision.

On the other hand, the state's highest judicial authority upheld the registration on the ballot for the US election in November of an amendment guaranteeing the right to abortion.

It is common in the US for voters to vote simultaneously in presidential elections, congressional elections, and on a variety of local issues.

If approved by at least 60% of the vote, this amendment will be added to the Florida Bill of Rights.

Specifically, the amendment prevents "the enactment of any law prohibiting, criminalizing, delaying, or restricting abortion before the fetus is formed, or when it is necessary to protect the health of the patient." The fetus is considered to be able to survive outside the womb around the 24th week of pregnancy.

Joe Biden's campaign team underlined yesterday that "this extreme new ban, which Donald Trump personally paved the way for, will represent a ban for all southeastern states"./ CNA
