Packages of cocaine on Australian shores

Beachgoers were surprised to find packages of cocaine wrapped in plastic on a popular beach in Australia.

Beachgoers at Freshwater and Curl Curl beaches near the capital Sydney discovered the 5kg packages, which were quickly seized by police.

But residents and officials say that such packages have been seen on the shore since the end of last year.

More than 250kg of the hard drug has been seized by police in the Australian state of New South since it was first found around Christmas time.

The cocaine is believed to have arrived on the beach from a shipping vessel, the origin of which is unknown.

Regional Crime Chief Jason Weinstein previously told ABC:

"Sometimes we see objects being deliberately thrown overboard to be picked up by another ship, but many of the brick-shaped packages of cocaine had been in the sea for a long time, and some even had mussels or barnacles attached to them. ."

The discovered packages were marked with codes such as Tesla, Zoe or RZ, the meaning of which has not been identified by the authorities.

Although officials believe the packages are of South American origin, they believe they may have been attached to be towed from the main craft, but possibly detached from it before the voyage ended.

Australians are among the biggest cocaine users in the world, followed by the British, according to an OECD network survey.

Detective Peter Moroney previously told the ABC in January: "Hiding cocaine in cargo ships has been around for a long time and bringing it into Australia is also more profitable than other countries such as Europe and the US."

In Australia, a kg of cocaine is sold for 120,000 dollars, compared to only 30,000 dollars that is sold in Britain, writes the British network "Metri".
