Turkish authorities arrested 340 people across the country for their participation in protests that took place after the mayoral election of the pro-Kurdish DEM party was canceled in the southeastern Turkish city of Van.

The arrests were announced by Interior Minister Ali Gerlikaya in a social media post, explaining that police operations were carried out simultaneously in 14 cities in southeastern, southern and western Turkey.

The Turkish Interior Minister announced yesterday 89 more arrests for the same reason.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Electoral Commission accepted DEM's objection and gave the nomination for mayor of Van to this party's candidate, Abdullah Zeidan.

However, the decision is temporary and will be reviewed when court proceedings are completed on whether he regained his civil rights after being convicted on charges of propaganda for a terrorist organization, specifically the PKK.

Abdullah Zeidan was elected in Sunday's municipal elections with 55.51% against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) candidate Abdullahat Arvas, who received 27.15% of the vote./ CNA
