After the killing of the charity workers in Gaza/ Israel fires two officers

Israel's military said on Friday it had fired two senior officers and reprimanded three others for their role in drone strikes in the Gaza Strip that killed seven workers while distributing food aid.

The Israeli investigation found that Israeli forces mistakenly believed they were attacking armed members of Hamas - a terrorist group designated by the United States and the European Union - when they droned three vehicles belonging to the charity group World Central Kitchen.

According to the investigation, they violated standard army procedures.

The killing of the charity workers on Monday, which Israel admitted, comes after continued accusations from key allies, including the US, that Israel is not doing enough to protect Gaza's civilians as it battles Hamas.

The investigation's findings are expected to raise doubts about the Israeli military's decision-making abilities.

Palestinians, charity groups and human rights organizations have repeatedly accused Israeli forces of firing indiscriminately on civilians during the conflict. Israel denies these accusations.

"It's a tragedy," said Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari.

"It is a serious event for which we are responsible. This should not have happened, and we will make sure it will not happen again," he added.

It is unclear whether these sentences and apologies will assuage international outrage over the killing of the World Central Kitchen workers, or whether they will convince international charity groups that it is safe to resume their work in Gaza, where a third of the population is on the brink of absolute starvation.

The seven workers killed came from countries such as Australia, Poland, Great Britain, as well as one with American-Canadian citizenship./ REL
