Biden: Israel is doing what I asked for aid in Gaza

US President Joe Biden said Israel is honoring his request to allow more aid to Gaza, a day after warning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to change US policy.

As he was leaving the White House, Biden was asked by reporters if during the telephone conversation with Netanyahu on April 4, the American leader threatened the Israeli prime minister with the suspension of military aid to Israel, the American president replied:

"I asked them to do what they are doing."

During the phone call, Biden warned Netanyahu that US policy toward Israel hinged on protecting civilians and aid workers in Gaza after an Israeli airstrike killed seven aid workers.

A few hours after this phone conversation, Israel announced that it would "temporarily" allow aid deliveries to northern Gaza, where residents are facing starvation. Aid will be sent from the Israeli port of Ashdod to the Erez crossing.

Israel also said it has fired two officers after finding they made "serious mistakes" during the drone strikes that killed workers at the World Central Kitchen organization.

However, the White House said Israel must do more to fulfill its promises to Biden.

"It is important that these commitments are fully realized and implemented quickly," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said during a conversation with reporters.

Biden's warning of a change in policy is the clearest indication of the potential conditionality of Washington's military support for Israel since the war in Gaza began on October 7.

The war began after Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union - attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping 250 others.

Israel has responded with an air and ground offensive in Gaza that has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands more, as aid organizations warn of high levels of hunger in the Palestinian enclave.
