Netanyahu: Israel will not accept a ceasefire without the release of the

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday, six months after the Hamas attack, that Israel will not agree to a ceasefire in Gaza without the release of the hostages.

Mr Netanyahu said that despite mounting international pressure, Israel would not give in to Hamas' "extreme" demands.

He made the comments at a government cabinet meeting as a new round of talks is expected in Egypt to try for a ceasefire.

An Israeli government official confirmed on Sunday that an Israeli delegation will take part in negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict and an agreement on the release of hostages.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army has withdrawn a number of ground troops from the southern part of the Gaza Strip, leaving only one brigade there six months after the offensive began, an army spokesman said on Sunday.

Israel has reduced the number of troops in Gaza since the beginning of the year to relieve reservists and under increasing pressure from its ally Washington to improve the humanitarian situation.

The army did not provide details on the reasons for the withdrawal of soldiers or how many of them would leave.

It is unclear whether the withdrawal means delaying a long-announced incursion into the southern Gaza city of Rafah, which Mr Netanyahu says is needed to eliminate Hamas.

Palestinian residents of the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, which has been under Israeli bombardment in recent months, said they had seen Israeli forces leave the city center and withdraw from the eastern parts./ VOA
