The local elections in Poland, proof of Prime Minister Tusk's pro-European

Poles are voting Sunday in local elections to elect councilors and mayors, who play a key role in how billions of euros in European Union funds are distributed.

The outcome of the election will also serve as an indication of their attitude towards the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose election in December marked a turning point for the largest country in the eastern part of the EU, putting it back on course - European.

For eight years, the previous Nationalist government took positions that clashed with Western allies.

The broad coalition headed by Mr Tusk won a majority in October's parliamentary elections on promises to ditch the previous government's judicial reforms that critics had said undermined the independence of the courts.

"Everyone who does not want their fate decided by someone else should vote," Mr Tusk told reporters after casting his vote in his home town of Sopot on the Baltic coast.

Prime Minister Tusk sees the victory of the Civil Coalition (KO), the largest grouping in the governing alliance, as essential to avoid a turn towards a nationalist regime under the Law and Justice (PiS) party.

The three ruling coalition parties have fielded separate candidates, so the vote is also a chance for Mr Tusk to cement his party's dominance in government.

European Parliament elections are held in June and Sunday's results will be closely watched from Brussels.

For PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the local elections offer a chance to send a warning message to the government.

"We have a chance ... to give the authorities in charge of Warsaw today a yellow card," he told his supporters on Friday./ VOA
